Gym Membership: Is It For Me?
After weeks of talking about attending a gym, I finally bit the bullet and visited a nearby gym attached to a hotel. A week's holiday at home meant no stress from commuting or dealing with the challenges of my job, providing the perfect opportunity to explore this potential new commitment.
There was an introductory offer available which I took advantage of, as there was little to lose. Sometimes the best decisions happen when we lower the barrier to entry and simply give something a try.
Fear of Commitment
I think one of the main barriers to joining a gym is commitment - this is both good and bad. Commitment compels you to attend the gym regularly because you've paid for it, often a few months in advance. This is good. Commitment compels you to attend the gym regularly and few of us like to be compelled to do something. That's bad.
The gym I visited was small and didn't have a vast range of equipment. It wasn't packed wall to wall with Mr Universe types or pseudo Olympians. I didn't feel intimidated because of the small size, as many standalone gyms can be the size of aircraft hangers. This more intimate environment actually made the experience far more bearable.
I tried out most of the equipment. My favourite being the spinning cycle, which had all the usual features like time, distance, calories burned, heart rate and ability to simulate the type of terrain which changed the effort needed to turn the pedals. The technology built into modern gym equipment makes tracking progress surprisingly motivating.
Pros and Cons of Gym Membership
Pros:
- Access to a variety of professional equipment that's expensive to purchase for home use, and you don’t need to worry about maintaining the equipment
- Structured environment that promotes regular exercise habits and routine
- Opportunity to try various workout styles and equipment before committing to specific fitness goals
- Many gyms offer classes, personal training options, and social interaction with like-minded individuals
- Climate-controlled space available regardless of weather conditions outside
- Many gyms have steam rooms, saunas and shower facilities
Cons:
- Monthly fees can add up quickly, especially if you don't use the membership regularly, and are subject to annual increases
- Travel time to and from the gym can be a barrier on busy days
- Peak hours can mean crowded facilities and waiting for equipment
- Initial intimidation factor, especially if you feel out of shape and unfamiliar with gym culture
- Contract commitments may lock you in even if circumstances change and you can no longer afford the monthly membership fee
Introductory Gym Offers
If you haven't visited a gym for a while and need that extra push to go, look out for introductory gym offers like a free gym pass or trial membership. When searching for gyms in your local area, many facilities offer these trial periods to help you find the right fit. These trials remove the financial pressure and allow you to test whether the environment, equipment, and location work for your lifestyle.
For example, if you live in the Gravesend area, simply toggle FootFall's Drop In tag to easily filter things that don't require a membership, or filter by price to discover what's in your budget.
When to Look Out for Free Trial Offers
The best time to look for free trial offers is around holiday times (think Christmas and Easter), or during summer holidays or end of the month.
Other times include:
- January - gyms may have a post-holiday push to get as many new signings as they can
- June, July and August, these are traditionally slow periods for gyms
- Special event days like:
- National Fitness Day (21st September)
- Mental Health Awareness Week (11th May 2026 to 17th May 2026)
- New gym openings
Dealing with the struggle to get or stay fit means dealing with one of your fears, and that is commitment.
Feeling compelled to go because we've spent the money sometimes means we just don't go at all.
However, joining a gym even on a trial basis has made my struggle to get fit a little easier. The key is finding what works for you, whether that's a large gym with every amenity or a small, approachable gym where you feel comfortable starting your fitness journey.
I recommend playing around with FootFall's vibe tags to find something that moves you.
